Starting a career as a DJ firstly you need to get introduced to few basic terms.Various free digital audio/video mixers are available (virtual dj 7.0 home free edition i would recommend.others include like ultramixer,tractor pro studio) which delivers same experience as one would have with his own DJ console live.but owing such console is too heavy for one’s pocket as the basic ones also starts around 20k bugs. few basic terms one should know before using any of the above :heres the link for Virtual Dj 7.0 home free editon to download.
CROSSFADER :In audio engineering, a fade is a gradual increase or decrease in the level of an audio signal.A crossfader on a DJ MIXER essentially functions like two faders connected side-by-side, but in opposite directions. It allows a DJ to fade one source out while fading another source in at the same time. This is extremely useful when BEATMATCHING two sources of audio (or more, where channels can be mapped to one of the two sides of the crossfader individually) such as phonograph records, CD’s or digital sources ie changing from one song to another with volume level of first one continuously decreasing and that of another continuously increasing while moving crossfader from one side to other.

BPM(beats per minute)-this is very important in terms of mixing as it gives you exact no. of beats per minute of track playing and enables you to sync beat of next track to the currently playing track else the mixing would sound too horrible if beats are not matching. virtual mixers calculate it automatically once the track is loaded in the any of the deck.
CUE point:- It helps you set a point or many on any track which you would like the track to be played from.As seen in above pic. set cue 1,2,3 buttons are there .on clicking them while playing any song sets cue at that point on the track.In most advanced mixers like virtual dj this cue points are also saved for future use even after once you close the app cue points will be restired back again.
PFL (Pre Fade Listen) :-This feature helps you to listen to the track to be played next through your headphone or monitor speaker or the any source used before fading in.It helps to set cue point and match beat of currently playing track and next track to be played.with PFL button pressed the track is played in background source ie headphone or monitor and is returned to main speaker as the button is released.
PITCH :-Many of you might be aware of this term.As the name suggest it controls the pitch (or tempo or bpm) of the song.you can increase or decrease the pitch of the song by sliding the pitch fader till it matches the pitch of the currently playing track.
SYNC:-This is the most important feature available in virtual mixers to automatically sync the pitch(tempo or BPM) of currently playing track with the next track to be played.As could be seen in above VDJ snap BPM’S of tracks on both the sides is set to 129.97.
LOOP:- This function helps as the name suggests to loop over the track for desired range of time ranging from 1/32 to 16 seconds.You might have noticed sometimes while currently playing track punch line is repeated many times .
DECK:-(CD player)-There could be 2-8 decks available in any virtual mixers while only 2 in real mixers as theres no need of more and also they cost much.They are basically cd or phonogram player and contains basic functions like looping,BPM indicator,pitch control,play/pause, set cue point.
GAIN:-In electronics, gain is a measure of the ability of a circuit (often an amplifier) to increase the power or amplitude of a signal from the input to the output. It is usually defined as the mean ratio of the signal output of a system to the signal input of the same system. It could be as tantamount as a volume control switch.As could be seen in the belo image 4-deck system, theres a gain control switch for each deck(channel).

FILTERS:-(HIGH,MED,LOW) These are the most important feautures same as gain control switch there are three filters corresponding to high,medium and low frequency.It basically comprises of an electronic circuit made from resistors n capacitors that helps you filter out various frequency from an input signal(in our case say audio signal).for eg. any normal track is made up of set of different frequencies ranging from 20 to 20k hz.for eg.frequency ranging from 200 to nealry 8k hz is for speech or vocals n more than 10k hz for bass or percussions .hence by setting this three knobs to different value an audio track can be filtered out from unwanted frequency.like when you want to mix two tracks KILL the med freqeuncy of playing track n KILL the HIGH frequency of next track to be played.now if the pitch or tempo of both the tracks is same this will give u output of an audio track having vocals of 2nd one and bass or background music of 1st one.this method and various others are adopted while fusing from one track to another.
KILL:- corresponding to each filter(high,med,low) there is a kill button.(not available in VIRTUALDJ 7.0 home free edition).Pressing this key simply means turning corresponding filter knob to zero.
SAMPLER:-This is just shortcut for enabling you to play pre recorded voice or tags such as any dj’s name or wraps.you can record your own voice or from text to speech feature or any punch line from any track.

EFFECTS:- Ranging from beatgrid,flanger,flippin double,vocals,brake,etc are various most common effects available in any virtual mixers.They modify the frequencies or adds extra effect to track to sound it best.
